Why people are leaving France for Brazil

For French remote workers, Brazil offers a different rhythm: more outdoor time, lower density, and a lower cost base.

Florianópolis specifically has a steady stream of French arrivals, language schools in Lagoa cater to them, and there is an established network of French-speaking accountants and lawyers in São Paulo for the tax setup.

What visa do you need?

French citizens enter Brazil visa-free for up to 90 days.

For longer stays, the standard route is the VITEM XIV digital nomad visa: US$1,500/month income or US$18,000 in savings, foreign employer or clients only, 1 year renewable to 2.

Apply at the Brazilian consulate in Paris, Marseille, or Lyon before flying. See the dedicated visa guide.

How does tax work between France and Brazil?

France and Brazil have a comprehensive double-taxation agreement in force since 1972 (Decreto nº 70.506/1972 on the Brazilian side). For most income types, you offset tax paid in one country against the other.

On the Brazilian side, the 183-day rule triggers tax residency; after that, you owe Brazilian IRPF on worldwide income via monthly Carnê-Leão plus an annual DIRPF declaration.

On the French side, your tax residency is broken when you no longer have your foyer (permanent home), your principal place of residence, your professional activity, or the centre of your economic interests in France. The four tests, and the way French authorities apply them, are stricter than the UK SRT. Talk to a French expat tax specialist before you fly.

CSG/CRDS, URSSAF, and the things that do not switch off automatically

A few specifically French gotchas:

  • CSG/CRDS, French social contributions can continue to apply to investment income even when you are non-resident, depending on your situation. EU court rulings have narrowed this but not eliminated it.
  • URSSAF (if freelance), you need to formally close or pause your micro-entrepreneur or auto-entrepreneur status, not just stop invoicing.
  • PEL, Livret A, PEA, French tax-advantaged savings wrappers lose most or all of their tax benefits once you are non-resident.
  • Sécurité Sociale, you do not get to keep healthcare access; CFE (Caisse des Français de l’Étranger) is the standard expatriate option.

How do you handle money between France and Brazil?

You earn in EUR, live in BRL. Inside Brazil, everything runs on Pix, about 47% of Brazilian financial transactions in 2024 settled through it.

A French IBAN does not Pix. A French card pays your Brazilian rent through SEPA-to-SWIFT-to-Brazilian-bank, with FX markup at every step.

A multi-currency wallet, EUR natively, BRL on Pix, is the cleanest setup. Liminal is built for it.

What to set up before you arrive

The French-specific checklist:

  • A CPF (apply at the Brazilian Embassy in Paris)
  • A multi-currency wallet with EUR and Pix
  • A SIM or eSIM plan (TIM works without a CPF)
  • Accommodation deposit via Pix
  • Form 2042 NR readiness, you may still file in France for one final year
  • CFE healthcare enrolment if you want to maintain French health coverage

Day-to-day differences

The structural shift is real.

France runs on systems: appointments, forms, time slots, RDV. Brazil runs on relationships: a WhatsApp, a contact, “I know a guy.”

Payments are immediate (Pix) rather than card-and-prélèvement.

Portuguese is necessary outside expat areas; Brazilian Portuguese is different from European Portuguese, but if you have any Spanish or Italian, you will reach functional faster than people warn you.

Is Brazil cheaper than France?

Yes, significantly, particularly outside Paris.

Florianópolis in 2026:

  • Furnished 1-bed: ~€530–€1,060/month
  • Eating out: ~€6–€12/meal
  • Cappuccino: ~€1.80

For a Paris remote worker, Floripa is roughly 40–55% cheaper for a comparable life. For provincial France, the gap is smaller but still meaningful.

How do you make the move actually work?

The French-to-Brazil cultural shift is the part you cannot prepare for in advance. The financial side, you can.

Liminal holds EUR natively, sends Pix like a local Brazilian account, and clears international transfers on stablecoin rails, none of which depend on SEPA or SWIFT timing. You arrive with the financial layer already running.

Get your finances ready before you move.

Move countries, not bank accounts.
